Medieval Market

We visited the Medieval Market in Alicante old town this weekend.  They usually organise this market just before the Hogueras festival and this time it was bigger than before, I think.

The old town streets are decorated with medieval-style flags and banners and each stall is decorated to fit as are the market traders, who also dress-up.  If you like buying arts and crafts there is alot on offer and although nearly everything is of a modern style the ambience created is really quite nice.  There are crafters working in the streets...

There are acrobatic displays and plays as well as sword fighting shows as well as areas for kids to try out old-style games, a mechanical merry-go-round or a little archery...

Then you can venture into the food areas where they prepare you fresh mojitos...

Or you can choose something to eat from the huge bbq or food stalls...

Or if you are just interested in seeing some old farm tools or every-day equipment (not sure if really Medieval though!) then they also have some on display.  There was an old trillo, which is a mule-drawn plank with flints buried in the wood on the underside which they used to pull over the wheat to separate the grain from the straw - see photos - and some distilling equipment too.

So if you ever visit Alicante at the beginning of June then dont miss the Medieval Market... (and maybe you can come and take some better photos than me!)
