Midnight firecrackers

The competition Mascletás Nocturnas Pólvora a la Nit 2013 started last night here in Alicante city. This contest for the prestige of the best firecracker display features a different pyrotechnic company each night from 14th til 18th June.  The display, which is all about sound (and the louder the better!) rather than sight, is organised in a different part of Alicante each night and usually starts at midnight.

A mascletá is the word for firecracker in the Valencian language.  They are basically like fireworks but not colourful nor decorative. They are mini explosions with some exploding on the ground, whose vibrations from the surrounding buildings go right through your body.  I was told whilst watching my first display that you should keep your mouth open a little to help stop your eardrums from bursting!  I guarantee that you will be surprised at just how loud these 5-10 minute displays get.  The firecrackers are all linked to a timed system and controlled by computer as each display follows the rhythm of a song... However I can never guess which one it is!
